Steele's Rock is a landmark in Ennis that has driven people to write epic poems to tell the world about their pain and troubles that they have or are going through. However Tom Steele was totally deluded and instead wrote a letter to Pope Pius VII, the pope at the time, telling him to change to protestant, another religion, sold his estate and went to join the army, strange. Every evening for several weeks in 1821 the love-struck Mr.Steele would sit on the rock and look up at the bedroom window of Miss Matilda Crowe in the hope of being rewarded with a sign of encouragement from Miss Crowe. Today, the window can be seen just above the sign for Steele's Pub at the elbow of the River Fergus.
